JAFCO Respite and Residential Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities Opening in 2013.
What is a Developmental Disability?
A developmental disability is a severe, chronic disability that begins any time from birth through age 21 and lasts for a lifetime. While not always visible, these disabilities can result in serious limitations in every day activities of life, including self-care, communication, learning, mobility, or being able to work or live independently. The five major types of developmental disabilities are:
- Autism
- Cerebral Palsy
- Intellectual Disability
- Prader Willi
- Spina Bifida
Why is JAFCO concerned?
- Approximately 4.5 million children in America have already been diagnosed with a developmental disability.
- Currently 1 out of 10 children is diagnosed with a developmental disability.
- Autism is the most common of the developmental disabilities, affecting an estimated 1 in 150 births and this number is on the rise.
- Developmental disabilities know no racial, ethnic, social or socio-economic boundaries and can affect any family and any child.
- Children with special needs are 3 times more likely to be victims of abuse.
- 80% of families raising a developmentally disabled child have experienced a divorce.
- Every member of our community will personally know someone who is raising a special needs child over the next few years.
The New JAFCO Respite and Residential Children’s Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities – Anticipated opening 2013
Given the alarming increase in the numbers of children with developmental disabilities and the tremendous stress this places upon families in our community, the JAFCO Board of Trustees has decided to expand our capacity to adequately serve special needs children and their families with the creation of the JAFCO Respite and Residential Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Set in a peaceful, natural environment, The Sam and Adele Borger Campus of The David Posnack Jewish Children’s Center will provide:
- Respite care (two weeks per year) for a child with a developmental disability to allow the parents (and the other siblings) to have an essential break from the sometimes overwhelming stressors of parenting a child with special needs.
- State-of-the-art treatment, support, research and education for parents, siblings and professionals in the community relating to the care of children with developmental disabilities.
- Temporary shelter or foster care placement for a child with a developmental disability who is at-risk.
